The Applied Ethics Institute of SPC Hosts Annual Keith Goree Lecture

The Applied Ethics Institute of St. Petersburg College will hold the annual Keith Goree Lecture with ABC Action News Chief Meteorologist Denis Philips on March 26 from 7 to 8:45 p.m. at the Chris Sprowls Workforce Innovation Hub at the Tarpon Springs Campus, 600 E Klosterman Road.

Phillips, a well-known face in the Tampa Bay region, has earned a reputation for his accurate and timely weather forecasts, particularly during storm seasons and hurricanes. As the Chief Meteorologist at ABC Action News, he has been an integral part of the local news landscape, offering crucial weather updates to help the community stay safe. His expertise in meteorology is only matched by his engaging on-air presence, which has made him a trusted source for weather-related news in the Tampa Bay area.

At this year’s lecture, Phillips will address key topics such as the vital role of community service in his life, the impact and influence of social media on both personal and professional levels, and of course, the science behind weather forecasting. Drawing from his extensive experience in meteorology, he will provide a behind-the-scenes look at how weather predictions are made and their importance to local communities. He will also explore how technology and social media have transformed how weather updates are delivered and consumed.

In addition to discussing his career and weather patterns, Phillips will share personal insights on how he uses his platform to engage with the community, promote public safety, and raise awareness of important issues. Attendees can expect a thought-provoking evening that connects weather forecasting with ethics in communication, media influence, and public service. 

About the Goree Lecture Series

The Keith Goree Applied Ethics Lecture Series is designed to provide thought-provoking presentations on ethics issues important to the SPC community. The event is named for the former Director of the Applied Ethics Institute who died in 2009. He taught ethics at SPC for more than 20 years, co-authoring the ethics textbook that more than 100,000 students have used at six universities.
