Pasco Elected Officials Paint Future Home for Habitat Family

Florida Senator Ed Hooper hosted this exclusive volunteer day in Holiday, FL

Holiday, FL – Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties welcomed a group of Pasco elected officials to one of its build sites on Wednesday morning in Holiday, FL. The special event was hosted by Florida Senator Ed Hooper (District 21), representing northern Pinellas County and western Pasco County. Exhibiting an effort to show that affordable housing is a nonpartisan issue, more than a dozen officials united to help the Hernandez Family move closer to their home dedication day at the end of November by painting the exterior of the home.

"To see this many community people out on the site shows that the Habitat message is spreading," said Senator Ed Hooper. "We need to make sure that every opportunity we get to spread the message, obtain some property, get people out to volunteer, and help somebody own a home will never stop."

"The Habitat program is a great program," said Florida Representative Brad Yeager. "We talk about affordable housing, and this is a fix for affordable housing."

"This program is for our teachers, beginning law enforcement, first responders, and many businesses people frequent each and every day," said Florida Representative Jeff Holcomb. "For them to be able to find affordable housing, this is a great avenue."

Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County and West Pasco Counties

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties has served over 800 homeowner partners since 1985. Volunteers and future homeowners construct the homes, which are sold at no profit and financed with a zero-interest loan. Habitat homeowner candidates earn 30 to 80 percent of the area median income. Candidates must demonstrate the need for adequate shelter; the ability to pay back a zero-interest loan and the willingness to partner with Habitat to complete a robust homebuyer education curriculum and invest 350 to 450 “sweat equity” hours. Mortgage monies are used to build even more homes, making each donation to Habitat a perpetual legacy to the community. Habitat believes that homeownership contributes to family stability, leading, in turn, to community stability. Additionally, the affiliate raises funds through their ReStores; home improvement outlets where donated household and building items are sold to the public. For more information about Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties, call (727) 536-4755 or visitwww.habitatpwp.org
