An Evening with Rob Sanders for Blood Brothers and Stitch by Stitch

Tuesday, September 6, 2022 (7:00 PM - 8:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Local author and friend of the bookstore Rob Sanders is back with not one but TWO fantastic LGBTQ+ children's books, and we are heading over to Coastal Creative to celebrate them!

Stitch by Stitch tells the story of Cleve Jones' extraordinary life from the blanket that his great-grandmother made for him as a boy, to the friends he gathered together in San Francisco as a young man, to the idea for a monument sewn of fabric and thread.

AND

In his Middle Grade fiction debut, Rob introduces readers to Calvin Johnson and his brothers. In Blood Brothers, Calvin and his brothers are in the fight of their lives. As a matter of fact, they’re fighting for life itself. Told in raw, honest verse, this is a timeless story, because at its core, Blood Brothers is a fight against prejudice where Calvin is trying to make sense of the senseless in the only way a twelve-year-old boy can. With hope.

This event is proudly presented in partnership with the Florida Freedom To Read Project! Florida Freedom to Read Project is a 501c4 organization of passionate citizens that believe school libraries and curriculum should be a place for all children to access information and ideas that they connect with or that gives them insight into a lived experience unlike their own.

Rob Sanders is a teacher who writes and a writer who teaches. He is known for his funny and fierce fiction and nonfiction picture books and is recognized as one of the pioneers in the arena of LGBTQIA+ literary nonfiction picture books. Rob’s nonfiction books continue to break new ground, including the first picture books about the Pride Flag, the Stonewall Uprising, a transgender Civil War soldier, a gay presidential candidate, and the first gay marriage in America. His work also continues to introduce readers to heroes of the LGBTQIA+
community—from Harvey Milk to Gilbert Baker, from Cleve Jones to Bayard Rustin, and more. His fiction explores friendship, relationships, standing up for others, and being allies. Blood Brothers, his first middle grade novel, written in powerful, raw verse releases in July 2022. And Rob pays it forward. He serves as co-regional advisor for SCBWI Florida and is a frequent speaker, teacher, mentor, coach, and critiquer. He is also a member of the SCBWI Impact and Legacy Fund Steering Committee. Rob is represented by Rubin Pfeffer.
